All Pokemon Starters By Generation

Intro

The huge world of Pokemon is filled with thousands of Pokemon for you to catch and train.

Starter Pokemon are the ones that you select at the starting of your Pokemon journey. All Pokemon starters are special and hold a unique place in your heart.

There are different generations of Pokemon games and in every generation, we are introduced to new starter Pokemon. In this post, we will discuss the list of all Pokemon starters by generation. If you are a hardcore Pokemon fan and love to play Pokemon games, then you should give this article a read.

Pokemon Starters By Generation

There is a total of eight generations of Pokemon available. Every generation comes with a different set of starter Pokemon. Now let’s dig deeper into the details.

Generation 1 (Red, Blue & Yellow)

The first generation starter Pokemon include Squirtle, Charmander, and Bulbasaur. These three are the most iconic of all the available Pokemon starters. They are special because they have a unique role to play on your Pokemon journey.

It was always a difficult decision to choose between these three. But it was kind of disappointing to find out that Pikachu was not a part of the starter Pokemon set. In Red and Blue Pokemon, Pikachu could be found only in the Power Plat or the Viridian Forest. Not to mention, it came with a very poor encounter rate.

However, Nintendo soon realized their mistake and added Pikachu as the yellow Pokemon in the starters.

Generation 2 (Gold, Crystal & Silver)

With generation 2, we were introduced to dual-type Pokemon. These were the Pokemon with different strengths and weaknesses. The introduction of dual-type Pokemon improved the combat and took it to the next level.

But the weird thing is that one of the three Pokemon in generation 2 belongs from the dual-type category. It includes Totodile which is a water-type Pokemon. Next, we have Cyndaquil which is a pure fire type Pokemon and the third one is Chikorita which is a grass type Pokemon.

Since none of these Pokemon were dual-type, they have very few weaknesses. But at the same type, their potential is limited by the fact that they are single-type Pokemon. According to players, Chikorita is one of the poorest starter Pokemon choices.

Generation 3 ( Sapphire, Ruby & Emerald)

Generation 3 came with an excellent selection of starter Pokemon. It included Mudkip, Torchic, and Treecko. All three Pokemon have evolution that are great from start to finish. Apart from these three starter Pokemon, generation 3 introduced 135 other Pokemon too.

This was the time when the Pokemon world got really big. They also added a new region named Hoenn. Along with that they also added a lot of new features that were never there in the Pokemon game before.

Out of the three starter Pokemon, Mudkip is perhaps the strongest one with fewer weaknesses. Even after evolving, he performs great. On the other hand, Treecko is a single-type Pokemon and probably the weakest of the three.

Generation 4 ( Pearl & Diamond)

In generation 4, we got the three best starter Pokemon. But it is disappointing to see that the designs of Pokemon are no longer unique. In this generation, we got Piplup, Turtwig, and Chimchar.

Turtwig is perhaps the second-best grass Pokemon after Bulbasaur. He has excellent defense and strength! He may be a bit slow but is quite powerful. Coming to Chimchar, he is one of the best fire type Pokemon you will find. The good thing is that Chimchar becomes a dual-type Pokemon after evolving. He turns into a fire/fighting type Pokemon which is a great combination.

As far as Piplup is concerned, he starts as a water-type Pokemon and then goes on to become the steel type.

Generation 5 (Black & White)

Generation 5 Black and White Pokémon games were the first to come up with a ‘National Pokédex’ after finishing the main story. In this generation, we get a lot of new additions and that too all the good ones. In the starter Pokemon set, we have Snivy, Oshawott, and Tepig.

In this generation, we received 156 Pokemon along with a new region named Unova to explore. Other interesting things that were included are rotation battles, seasons, triple, and a great story that covers mature themes.

It is because of all these reasons that generation 5 is considered to be one of the best Pokemon generations. But disappointing thing is that it has the worst choice of Pokemon in the starter.

Generation 6 (X/Y)

In generation 6, you no longer get your starter Pokemon from a professor. Instead, it is given to you by your neighbours. In this generation, you get Chespin, Froakie, and Fennekin.

Chespin is a grass type Pokemon that evolves into a grass/fighting type combo. Fennekin starts as a fire type Pokemon and then evolves into a fire/psychic type Pokemon. Despite these two powerful Pokemon, Froakie remains to be the favourite.

Froakie is known for its speed and hidden ability. If you use Froakie rightly, you can destroy your opponent.

Generation 7 (Moon & Sun)

Generation 7 introduced a lot of new Pokemon, but most of them are considered to be ugly. In the starter set, you get Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio.

Most of the Pokemon in this generation are plain looking. For instance, Litten looks like a cat, Popplio looks like a seal and Rowlet looks like an owl. There seems to be very little uniqueness in the Pokemon in this generation.

Generation 8 (Shield & Sword)

The latest of all is generation 8 which includes Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. This new generation of Pokemon came with a lot of changes.

This was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019. These are the first games since Generation 2 that don’t have any dual-type starter Pokemon.

With every new Pokemon generation, the Pokemon world has grown big and we have been introduced to new Pokemon.
